Viking Sports Wrap

The boys XC team won the Logansport Invite last night setting the school record lowest team score in an invite with 23 points.  In the reserve race Paul Hernandez was the reserve Champion.  The team also won the invite putting 8 runners in the top 10.

The girls XC team won the Logan Invite as well with a score of 25 points.  Molly King finished 1^st , followed by Becca Goodman (2), Olivia Eckert (5), Karson Rowe (8), Cassie Hacker (9), Elaine Yahne (11^th). 

The boys Soccer team (6-6-1) lost to Marion in overtime, 3-1.  Taylor Allred found the back of the net for the lone score.  Marion was able to score two goals in the overtime session.  The JV team (5-4-4) tied Marion with a 0 to 0 score.  This is the fourth tie on the year for the JV team.

Womens Tennis

The Foresters struggled against MCC rival falling 8-1 to the Trojans of Taylor University.

Erica Abel was HU's only winner on the day.  She recorded the 6-1, 6-0 win at #5 singles.

Taylor started things off by sweeping doubles play.  Haley Neiderhiser and Raelyn Althoff fell 8-4 at #1.  Joni Holsem and Kelsey Mark kept it tight losing 9-7 at #2 while Abel and Kristen Lahman were blanked 8-0 at #3.

In singles action, Neiderhiser went down 6-2, 6-0 at #1.  Not able to finish her first set because of a shoulder injury, Althoff retired her match giving Taylor the win at #2.  Mark (#3) and Lahman (#4) fell 6-1, 6-0 and 6-4, 6-0 respectively.  Lauren Sunderman came up empty at #6, 6-0, 6-0.

The lost drops the women to 4-5 on the season and 3-4 in the MCC.

Schroeder, Keske named Forester Athletes of the Week

HUNTINGTON, IN—The Huntington University Athletic Department announced its Athletes of the Week for the week of Sept. 28-Oct. 4. Women’s volleyball senior Alyssa Schroeder and men’s soccer senior Kevin Keske earned the honors for their outstanding efforts during the week’s competitions.  

Alyssa Schroeder, a senior business management major from Huntington, Ind. (Huntington North High School), helped lead Huntington to a 2-1 record for the week. Schroeder dished out 103 assists in the three matches for an average of 34.3 per game. She also chipped in nine aces and three blocks for the week. The Foresters return to action on Sept. 30 when they travel to Bethel College for a 7 p.m. start.

Boys varsity soccer (6-5-1) lost to Muncie Central in overtime, 3-2.  Jacob Hoff and Colin Downey both put one past the goalie.  

The JV team (5-4-3) won 6-1.  Aaron Hopkins (2), Xavier Carrillo, Trevor Willour, Javier Fernandez, and Ben Wilcox all scored. 

The Girls varsity soccer (6-7) lost 2-0 to Muncie Central.

Colts pound Cardinals 31-10 to stay undefeated

In last weeks win at Miami, the Colts' had the ball less than 15 minutes, almost a modern day record in futility for time of possession.  So if you assumed the Colts' offense was well rested, you would be correct.  Manning completed 24 of 35 passes for 379 yards and four touchdowns while the running game finally got on track, going for a buck-twelve as the Colts stayed undefeated at 3-0 with a 31-10 win in Arizona.

Arizona would get on the board first with a Neil Rackers 38-yard field goal and were driving again when Colts strong safety Melvin Bullet would put a hit on the Cardinals Tim Hightower, jarring the ball lose for a Colts recovery inside their own 5-yard line.

The Colts would take advantage of the first of two Arizona turnovers inside the redzone and drive 95 yards, capped by a circus one-handed grab by Reggie Wayne on a 20-yard strike from Manning and the 7-3 lead.

Clausen rallies Irish past Boilers, 24-21

In what is becoming a habit for Notre Dame, the Irish used a late 2-yard touchdown pass from Jimmy Clausen to Kyle Rudolph with 24 seconds remaining to lift the Irish over the Boilers Saturday night.  It was the third straight  game for the Irish decided in the last minute of the game.  The Irish got the ball with less than four minutes remaining, just after Purdue had taken it's first lead since early in the game; using a Clausen to Robby Parris 15-yard hook up on a third and 13 to keep the drive alive.  Clausen would then find Golden Tate for 17 yards, setting up the dramatic finish on a fourth and goal from the two.

Purdue would waste no time getting on the board, taking the opening kickoff 80 yards in 8 plays, getting the score on a 36-yard pass from Joey Elliot to Aaron Valentine and the early 7-0 lead.  Notre Dame would answer with a Matt Tausch 34-yard field goal with 2:23 remaining in the first quarter to cut the Purdue lead to 7-3.

WildKats too much for Vikings, 40-16

Coach Gilg stressed the need for the Vikings to answer the bell against Kokomo Friday night.  Well, they did, unfortunately it wasn't until 4:48 left in the first half and only after Kokomo had amassed a 28-0 lead.  The Wildkats used long touchdown runs on their first three possessions and built a 21-0 first quarter lead.  Aided by a strong, suffocating defense and a steady rain, the Vikings were unable to get anything going offensively and found themselves down 28-0 before they knew what hit them.

The Wildkats wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, with just a buck-thirty gone in the game, senior Dylan Green took the inside handoff from quarterback T.J. Wier and went 46 yards for the early 7-0 Kokomo lead.  The Wilkats would go up 14-0 on their next series when Dylan Green would this time outrun the Viking defenders for a 69-yard score.

After another first quarter Vikings punt, Kokomo would turn to senior Casey Shipley to carry the load.  Shipley, taking the handoff off-tackle from the Wing-T formation, would rumble 67 yards and the score.  A missed extra-point would put the Vikings down 20-0.

Weekend Preview

HuntingtonCountySports.com has a full weekend of football lined up for you.  Tonight, we will have the Huntington North vs. Kokomo game recap as soon as the game ends.  Saturday, and I tell you this to gloat a little, I will be on the sidelines (and press box) of the Purdue vs. Notre Dame matchup.  Sweet!  And of course on Sunday, we will have the important NFL recaps for you, even the Bears, Bear fan.

Viking Sports Wrap

Varsity volleyball (14-9) beat NCC rival Kokomo 25-14, 25-21, 20-25, 25-9.  Ashli Rice pounded 13 kills and found 6 aces up her sleeves.  Melissa Grossman had 10 kills. Allie Zahm had 34 assists and Morgan Broderick had 21 digs.  

The JV team (13-6) moved to 7 games over .500 with a 25-20 and 25-17 win.  Gretchen Pegan was exceptional all night and collected 5 kills.  Hannah Landrum had 2 aces, Kayla Koch had 14 assists, and Taylor Hiers had 4 digs.  

The 9^th team (6-7) won in two games, 25-13  & 25-17.  Allyson Trout had 7 kills, Audrey Hiner had 12 assists, and Josie Eckert had 3 aces.

"To be successful in this game, we need to answer the first bell.  Kokomo comes at you so strong that most teams haven't been able to recover.  For us to have a shot, we need to stand up to the initial charge and keep at it.  We need to attempt to get them out of their comfort zone, which is difficult this year because they appear very comfortable throwing the ball.  Offensively, we need to get first downs and get into a rhythm.  While their offense gets the headlines, the success they've had is in large part because of their defense." - Coach Gilg

Coming off an impressive win against previously undefeated Logansport, the Vikings go from the frying pan into the fire as they travel to Kokomo Friday night in a battle of NCC powers.  "The Logansport game was our best four quarter performance to date this year from the early blocked punt in the game to our defensive line establishing themselves and our defense really stepping up to stop the run,"  Coach Gilg lamented about last week's win.  "What I was most pleased about was the intensity with which we played last Friday.  Our kids played hard, focused football and the result spoke for themselves," Gilg added.
