The Komets (15-11-0-1) opened a home and home series with
the Dayton Gems (13-14-3-1), the start of four games in five days, looking for
consistency. The Komets, coming
off a 7-2 win over first place Muskegon last Saturday and then losing to last
place Flint the following day and dropping into a third place tie in the IHL. Despite being out shot 36-20, the
Dayton Gems used the Komets inconsistent play to rush to a 6-4 win.
Dayton got things started when Dan Lapointe put back a
rebound of a Matt Auffrey shot, just out of the reach of Komet netminder Nick
Boucher at the 11:59 mark for the 1-0 lead. The Komets used a P.C. Drouin one-timer on the power play to
knot the game at 1-1, after one.
Dayton struck first in period two, John Snowden went high
with a wrister for the score and 2-1 Gems lead. The Komets had two 5 on 3 chances in the second,
capitalizing only once; a Guy Dupuis one-timer to tie the score 2-2.
The final frame belonged to the Gems, getting goals from
Jonathan Ornelas for the 3-2 advantage and John Snowden, who took the turnover
in the neutral zone, drove down the left side and got the puck past Boucher on
the wrap around for his second goal of the night and the 4-2 lead. Matt Auffrey made it 5-2 when he put
back a rebound to the empty side of the net for the goal. Two late goals by the Komets, including
one from Lincoln Kaliegh Schrock cut the lead to 5-4 with just over two minutes
to play but an empty netter from the Gems provided the final margin for Dayton,
6-4.
