Fort Wayne, IN — The Komets capped week 16 and the month of January with two wins to give them four out of six points for the week. The Komets finished their strongest month of the season to date with an 8-2-0-1 record, improving to 25-13-0-2 for 52 points and third place in the IHL and trail first-place Muskegon by 11 points with 11 weeks remaining in 2009-10. By comparison, last year after 40 games the Komets were in third place trailing first-place Port Huron by four points.
The week started with the Komets suffering their largest margin of defeat 6-1 at Port Huron Tuesday. The Komets recovered with a 4-1 home win over Quad City Friday in front of 9,359 fans at the Coliseum. Sunday at Port Huron the Komets finished the week and the month of January with their first win of the season in four trips to McMorran Arena 4-2.
Three games in four nights this week for the Komets
This week the Komets will skate three games in four nights starting with a visit from the Dayton Gems Wednesday at 7:30pm. It's the seventh meeting of the season with the Komets leading the series 4-2-0-0. The Gems upended the Komets 6-4 the last time they visited on Dec. 29 to even the series on Fort Wayne ice at 1-1. The Komets blanked the Gems at Dayton 3-0 in the last meeting Jan. 10. Dayton is coming off a week of three losses and are 1-6-0-0 in their last seven games.
Friday the Komets stay home to host the Port Huron Icehawks at 8pm. It will be the third meeting with the Icehawks in five games for Fort Wayne. The Komets trail Port Huron in the season series 2-4-0-0. The Icehawks are taking a three-game losing streak into this week's action and will skate at Quad City Wednesday before visiting Fort Wayne Friday.
Saturday the Komets finish week 17 at Quad City at 8:05pm (Fort Wayne time). The Komets are undefeated in regulation by the Mallards this season in eight meetings (7-0-0-1). It's the sixth of eight trips to Fort Wayne by Quad City. The Mallards are 3-1-0-0 in their last four games and enter the week with a two-game win string. Quad City plays host to Port Huron Wednesday before welcoming the Komets Saturday.
Home cookin'.....the Komets have won six straight home games and are an improved 14-3-0-1 at the half-way mark of 18 home games this season. Last year the Komets were 8-7-1-2 after 18 on home ice.
Komet streaks.....P.C. Drouin has a three-game point streak (1 goal, 2 assists). Colin Chaulk (C) is riding a three-game assist streak. Netminder Nick Boucher has appeared in four straight games and has won two straight.
Number 100 for Boucher.....Nick Boucher marked his 100th appearance as a Komet goaltender Tuesday when he entered the game in relief of goalie Tim Haun.
It's a new Komet record......Guy Dupuis set a new Fort Wayne franchise record for a career defenseman when he scored the Komets' lone goal of the game Tuesday at Port Huron. It was his 188th all time goal as a Komet defenseman breaking the record of 117 set in 1989 by Jim Burton.
Wild Wednesdays begin this week.....It's time for Wild Wednesdays at Komet Hockey! Wild Wednesday get underway this week when the Dayton Gems visit Wednesday at 7:30pm. Fans will be treated to various animals from the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo and $2.50 beers and $1 Pepsi's at the game. This week's game starts a string of three Komet home Wild Wednesdays in a row. Wild Wednesdays continue with two in March and one in April.
Got an "A"? Get a Free Ticket!!.....the annual Komets' Comcast Report Card Night is this Friday when the Komets host Port Huron at 8pm. Always popular, students are treated to a free ticket for Friday's game when they show their report card with an "A" grade or equivalent at the Coliseum Ticket Office. It's always smart to get your tickets early for this game.
Friday night Marathon Nights.....Friday nights are Marathon Nights at Komet home games. Fans can take advantage of a buy-one-get-one-free ticket offer with two fill-ups when the Komets host the Port Huron Icehawks this Friday, Feb. 5 at 8pm. Fill Up Cards are available at participating Marathon stations.
