Lady Vikings and
Crago Win Regional;
Vikings and Neff
Second
Muncie - On
the day after a snow storm struck mid-Indiana, and the Indiana High School
Bowling regional in Muncie was delayed two hours, canceled until Sunday, than
rescheduled for later Saturday, the Huntington North bowling teams held their
composure and overcame the ever changing schedules and a new state mandated
sport oil pattern for post season tournaments, as the Lady Vikes and Tonya
Crago won team and individual regional titles and the Vikings and Tyler Neff
were runner-up. Both teams and eight Huntington North bowlers advanced to the
Richmond Semi-State next Saturday.
Led by four seniors wanting the state title that eluded them
a year ago, the Lady Vikings made a statement and rolled to the team
championship, easily outdistancing five other teams to grab the regional title.
In the team competition, teams rolled two regular team games, moving to a
different pair of lanes after the first game. Also, for the first time Indiana
High School Bowling mandated a sport type oil pattern on the lanes to make the
playing conditions a more difficult than the average house pattern and reward
good shot making. After the two games, the teams were seeded for five Baker
games based on their two game total.
The Lady Vikings took control early on the “Beaten Path” oil
pattern, rolling 956 the first
game and leading Brownsburg by 97
pins after the first game. Ayla Yeiter had 204, Lesley Love 203, Tonya
Crago 185, Elizabeth Bischoff 184 and Brittany Notestine 180. They rolled 966
the second game for a 1900 two game total and a 211 pin lead over Brownsburg.
Bischoff rolled 211, Yeiter 210, Crago 185 and Notestine 180. Love started the
third game but struggled and Audrey Hiner finished the game for 158. In Baker,
Sierra Rice joined the Lady Vikes as they rolled games of 163-138-158-208-226
for a qualifying total of 2792 and the regional title, 248 pins in front of
second place Decatur Central. Decatur Central and Muncie Southside were the other
girl’s teams to advance. The team and individual regional titles were decided
by total pins only and not a step-ladder final as planned, due to the late
start of the rescheduled regional and weather.
The boys regional was hotly contested and not decided until
the fifth Baker game. Bloomington South stayed close but the Vikings traded the
lead several times with host Muncie Central, eventually losing to them by 22
pins. In the first game the Vikings took a slim lead over Muncie Central
rolling 1004 to the Bearcat’s 996. EJ Tackett had 267, Tyler Carroll 198, Adam
Fruit 190, Connor Brown 176 and Gage VanDine 173. Game two saw the Vikes
struggle until the seventh frame but finished with 963. Tyler Krepp had 233,
Tackett 221 and Tyler Carroll 168. Fruit and Brown started the second game but
VanDine and Tyler Neff were subbed in for them and finished with 156 and 185.
In Baker the Vikes grabbed a 22 pin lead over Muncie Central after the first
game but fell 22 pins short of Central for the title rolling Baker games of
209-193-218-192-180.
Bloomington South, their first year with a team, finished
third. Columbus North was the only team unable to make it to the Muncie
regional due to the weather. They were rescheduled to bowl at the New Castle
regional which was also cancelled on Saturday and rescheduled for Sunday.
Lady Viking senior Tonya Crago rolled 600 for three
games(214-174-212) and out distanced 17 other bowlers and won the individual
regional title by nine pins over teammate and runner-up senior Lesley Love.
Like the team, because of the weather, the regional champion was decided by
total pins for three games, not a step-ladder final. Love had 591(171-206-214).
Freshman Audrey Hiner rolled 559(201-178-189) and Ayla Yeiter 554(197-200-157)
to also advance. It took a three game score of 535 in the girl’s competition to
advance.
Viking junior Tyler Neff just missed the regional title and
finished runner-up by just 23 pins, rolling a three game total of
694(207-231-256). Adam Fruit and Tyler Carroll also qualified for the
semi-state rolling scores of 620(245-203-172) and 610(234-200-176)
respectively. The biggest upset of this year’s state tournament came when EJ
Tackett, the other Viking to qualify for the regional and the defending
regional, semi-state and state individual champion, and the second high average
in the state, missed the cut to
advance by just two pins rolling a score of 600(219-189-192). It took 602 to
advance and Tackett is the first alternate for the semi-state.
The team semi-state begins Saturday at 9:00am at Richmond 40
Lanes in Richmond, with singles at 2:00pm.
