LANSING, Mich. – The Lansing Lugnuts put up seven runs in the eighth inning as they rallied to beat the TinCaps, 8-4, Tuesday at Cooley Law School Stadium. RHP Keyvius Sampson pitched 5.1 strong innings in a no-decision.
Rymer Liriano had an other strong game, going 3-for-4 with a triple and a walk.
Fort Wayne jumped ahead in the top of the fifth when Jake Blackwood dumped a two-out RBI single to left-center. Later in the inning, RHP Dayton Marze balked home Wes Cunningham to make it 2-0.
Rico Noel extended the lead in the seventh when he crushed his first home run of the season, a solo blast to left to give Fort Wayne a 3-0 lead.
Lansing got on the board in the bottom of the seventh when Oliver Dominguez bounced an RBI groundout to cut the margin to 3-1.
In the eighth, Emmanuel Quiles led off with a single, then Dan Killian doubled to put two on with nobody out. A wild pitch brought home Quiles, but the TinCaps could score no further and it stayed 4-1.
Lansing rallied in the eighth as RHP Yefri Carvajal allowed hits to all three batters he faced, including a two-run double by Kevin Nolan. K.C. Hobson tied it when he flipped a double into the left-field corner, then Oliver Dominguez stroked a two-run single to center to make it 6-4. Two more runs scored to cap the rally, including one on a double by Markus Brisker.
TinCaps LHP Jeff Ibarra (0-1) absorbed the loss while Lansing RHP Danny Barnes (4-0) stayed perfect to pick up the win.
The TinCaps fell to 19-26. The first-place Lugnuts improved to 27-17.
The TinCaps and Lugnuts (Class-A Toronto Blue Jays) continue the three-game series Wednesday at 10:35 a.m. Fort Wayne RHP Zach Cates (0-3) gets the call against Lugnuts RHP Daniel Webb (3-3).
