Vikings fall to Ft. Wayne North in wild game

HUNTINGTON – North Side overcame penalties, turnovers and Huntington North for a 28-21 non-conference road win Friday.

With the penalties piling up, the Redskins began to lose their composure, their lead and almost the game in a furious fourth quarter.

“The cards were dealt against us,” North Side coach Ryan Hall said. “You can say this, and you can that but there were so many questionable calls that all went against North Side. There’s nothing we can do about it. We just had to keep playing, and that’s what we told our defense.”

Game day with Coach Rief Gilg

1. Coach Gilg,  give us your impression from your week 1 loss to Homestead?

One thing I liked regarding the Homestead loss is the aggression and passion that our kids played with.  It is obvious that Homestead is an excellent football team, and we made to many mistakes to win the game.  We had a couple of very bad special teams breakdowns, and we struggled to tackle them in space.  Offensively we did some good things, but we need to continue to work on pad level and fundamental football.

2.  What can Vikings' fans look for from Ft. Wayne North?

Northside is an extremely athletic, aggressive football team.  They won big week one, scoring 50+ points, and they run an offense similar to Homestead, so we will find out very early if we have improved.  Defensively, they blitz from everywhere and are athletic enough to cover any holes they may leave!  This is a very good football team and we will need to play extremely well.

3.  Any new injuries for the Vikings heading into Friday's game?

Komets Ink Podshendyalov; Preseason roster grows to 25

Fort Wayne, IN -- The Komets announced Wednesday that left winger Artem Podshendyalov will be returning from last season and will be in the Komet camp when it begins Monday, Oct. 10.

Podshendyalov (pod-SHEN-duh-loff), 21, made his pro debut last season with the Komets posting eight goals and 18 points in 32 games after joining the Komets at the half-way point of the 2010-11 campaign.  The Omsk , Russia native was named the Komets' Most Improved Player for the year and added a goal and seven points in eight post-season games.   Prior to joining the Komets, Podshendyalov led the 2009-10 Bradford Rattlers of the Greater Metro Hockey League (GMHL) in Ontario with 62 goals, 62 assists and 124 points in 42 games.  The league's goal-scoring leader was also named the GMHL's Best Forward of the year.

In addition to Podshendyalov, the Komets also added rookies Jean-Michel Rizk and Olivier Hotte.

Kramer has busy summer

He showed up in the lobby at Parkview Hospital just before 10:15 Wednesday morning, wearing a crisp white shirt with the Mad Ants’ logo over the left breast, and the look of a man at his ease.

Blink twice, and he’ll be off somewhere else – maybe Italy or South America or some outpost yet undreamed, maybe right back in Ants coach Joey Meyer’s neighborhood. He doesn’t know yet, he says. The situation, as they say, is fluid. It’s still summer for him, narrow as that season is for a man who earns a paycheck playing a game he once played in his driveway.

Owner: Colts agree to terms with QB Collins

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—No Brett Favre? No problem: The Colts are bringing another veteran quarterback out of retirement, hoping Kerry Collins will be a solid back up plan in case Peyton Manning isn’t healed by the regular season.

Colts owner Jim Irsay tweeted Wednesday: “We have agreed to terms with Kerry Collins…more details to come.” There was no immediate word from the Colts.

The 38-year-old Collins retired in July after 16 seasons in the NFL. He had faced free agency after his contract with the Titans expired, though he said he still wanted to play.

For the love of GOD..NO - Colts’ owner Irsay tweets he’s in Favre’s hometown

HATTIESBURG, MISS. Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay posted on his Twitter account that he was in Brett Favre’s hometown, but the quarterback’s agent says he has not heard of any interest from the Colts.

The 41-year-old Favre retired in the off-season after a 20-year career and lives in Hattiesburg. Irsay sent a tweet on Sunday saying “Brad, I’m in Hattiesburg ... is it right or left at the Firechief?”

Favre’s longtime agent Bus Cook said he hadn’t spoken with the quarterback in a few days, but the “last time I saw him he was on his tractor mowing the back forty.”

Komets re-sign two-time champion Thomas

Fort Wayne, IN -- The Komets announced Thursday that veteran center Leo Thomas has agreed to terms and will be returning for his fourth consecutive season with the K's.

Thomas, 29, skated to IHL championships with the Komets in 2009 and 2010 and led Fort Wayne during the 2009-10 regular season with 33 goals.  Last season Thomas posted 18 goals, 27 points and 70 penalty minutes in 50 games.  During his Fort Wayne career of 182 games Thomas has amassed a total of 78 goals, 61 assists and 139 points.  The Toronto , Ontario native has been the recipient of the Komets' Mr. Hustle Award in 2008-09 and was named Unsung Hero for 2009-10.  Thomas will be entering his ninth career year since making his pro debut with Flint in the UHL in 2003-04 following a Continental Elite Hockey League championship with Detroit in 2002-03 when he led the Lightning with 42 goals and 84 points in 50 games.

Huntington North opens the 2011 season at home on Friday against rival Homestead.  We will talk with Vikings Coach Rief Gilg each week and get his thoughts on the previous week's game and to preview the upcoming week's contest. This week, we kick off the season with the Homestead preview:

1.  Coach Gilg, your impressions from your scrimmage last Friday against Fort Wayne North?  

Scrimmages are used to evaluate what you need to work on, and what stood out to me was our fundamentals.  Our pad level was too high all night, and we struggled to dominate the line of scrimmage as a result of that.  We did see a lot of good things on film, but we need to improve in all facets of our game before we start our season.

Hunter-Reay prevails in wet, wild race

LOUDON, N.H. -- Ryan Hunter-Reay was the race leader when moisture on the racing surface at New Hampshire Motor Speedway brought out the yellow flag with 19 laps remaining in the MoveThatBlock.com Indy 225. About 20 minutes later and after much confusion, he was in Victory Circle for a muted celebration.

He's not complaining, mind you.

The finish order was set based on the Lap 215 running order under caution after a Lap 217 restart that went awry because of a slick racing surface was negated. Rule 1.1 (B) (4) states: INDYCAR also reserves the right to take whatever action and/or impose whatever penalty it deems necessary to maintain the integrity of INDYCAR, the IZOD IndyCar Series and/or its events.

2010-11 Komet rookie of the year Dustin Molle re-signs

Fort Wayne, IN -- The Komets announced Wednesday that the preseason roster has reached 21 players with the addition of four defensemen and one forward.  Defenseman Dustin Molle has re-signed and will be joined in training camp with his brother Byrant.  Also agreeing to terms are defensemen Tristin Llewellyn and Dave Starenky and winger Stephon Thorne.

Dustin Molle, 25, joined the Komets in January last season and scored a goal and five assists while accumulating 42 penalty minutes in 39 games.  In addition to being named the Komets' Rookie of the Year, the Ancorage, Alaska native was awarded the Bud Gallmeier Memorial Trophy for Community Service. 

Bryant Molle will join his brother Dustin at the Komet blue line when training camp begins Oct. 10.  Bryant Molle, 24, completed four years of play in the CCHA at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks last season and also appeared in two games with Alaska in the ECHL.

Notre Dame WR Michael Floyd Reinstated To Fighting Irish Football Team

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - University of Notre Dame senior wide receiver Michael Floyd (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) has been reinstated as an active member of the Fighting Irish football team, Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly announced Wednesday.

Floyd was suspended indefinitely from the football team on March 21.

“From the very beginning of this process, Michael knew what was expected for him to be a member of our football program,” Kelly said. “I told Michael that football needed to become of less importance to him while he worked on personal growth. Over the last four months, Michael impressed those that had close contact with him including professional advisors. Based on my own observations, I am very pleased with the progress Michael has made since March. That is why I am comfortable reinstating him to our football team. Michael knows that he must continue on this positive track. I look forward to witnessing the development he has made based on lessons learned from this situation and how that will lead to better choices in the future.”

Komets sign defenseman simon Mangos

Fort Wayne, IN -- The Komets announced Wednesday that three more players have agreed to terms and have been added to the preseason roster.

Defenseman Simon Mangos and forwards Adam Krug and Shane Heffernan have inked agreements and will be in the Komet camp when it opens on Monday, Oct. 10.

Mangos, 31, will be joining fellow 2011 CHL champion Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs Brett Smith and Jamie Milam in the Fort Wayne lineup.  Mangos and Smith were also teammates for four years at Ferris State University prior to turning pro in 2004.  The Cambridge , Ontario native led CHL defensemen in the 2011 playoffs with four goals and 15 points in 21 games.  Mangos posted five goals and 32 points last year in regular season play and registered a career year in 2009-10 with 33 assists and 45 points in 63 games with Bossier-Shreveport.
