Colts come from behind to beat Bengals 20-16

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- The Indianapolis Colts newcomers may have just made Chuck Pagano's next task that much harder.

With cut-down day looming, rookie quarterback Chandler Harnish, Mr. Irrelevant, led the Colts on three touchdown drives and threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to rookie tight end Dominique Jones with 6:54 left in the game to give Indy a 20-16 victory over Cincinnati.

Now the Colts coach must decide who stays, who goes and who might return on the practice squad.

''It's extremely tough because these guys have worked their whole lives, dreamed of something their whole lives since Pop Warner really, and we have 22 bags to pack tomorrow at some point,'' Pagano said. ''It's extremely tough.''

Cubs come from behind to win walk-off thriller

CHICAGO -- Just when you thought the Cubs season was over, they come through with what manager Dale Sveum called one of the biggest wins of the year.

Alfonso Soriano hit a walk-off RBI single with one out in the ninth on Thursday to cap a three-run rally and lift the Cubs to a 12-11 win over the Brewers. The surge in the ninth was the second comeback in the game, as they overcame a 9-3 deficit with a six-run sixth, capped by rookie Brett Jackson's two-run double.

"There were multiple heroes in that game," Sveum said. "It all worked out. That was nice. That was one of our, if not our best win of the year."

Ball State out runs MAC foe EMU in season opener, 37-26

MUNCIE, Ind. -  The Ball State University football team defeated Eastern Michigan,37-26, Thursday night at Scheumann Stadium in its season and Mid-American Conference opener.

"I am proud of the kids," Ball State second-year head coach Pete Lembo says.  "They were really resilient in the second half and really came out focused in the second half.  I cannot quite explain some of the things in the first half because there were certainly moments where I thought we looked really good, and then obviously turnovers and some of the penalties and big plays we gave up hurt us." 

The Cardinals 11-point margin of victory was the largest in the series with the Eagles since a 38-16 Cardinals win in 2008. The previous three meetings were each decided by three points or fewer.

Komets enter affiliation with NHL's Anaheim Ducks and AHL's Norfolk Admirals

Fort Wayne, IN --  The Komets announced Wednesday that they have entered into an affiliation agreement with the National Hockey League's (NHL) Anaheim Ducks and the American Hockey League's (AHL) Norfolk Admirals for 2012-13.  

2012-13 marks the 19th anniversary season of the Ducks in Anaheim since they became a member of the NHL in 1993.  Anaheim's head coach is former Komet player and head coach Bruce Boudreau.  Boudreau skated with the Komets two seasons, 1990-91 and 1991-92 and served as head coach 1993-94 and 1994-95, earning the IHL's Commissioner's Trophy (Coach of the Year)  for 1993-94.  Boudreau joined the Ducks last season after a five-year stint as head coach of the NHL's Washington Capitols. 

Wood solid on hill and at plate, but loses to Crew

CHICAGO -- Travis Wood did everything he could to beat the Brewers. He just didn't get much help.

Wood hit his third career home run but also served up a three-run shot to rookie Jeff Bianchi as the Brewers beat the Cubs, 4-1, on Tuesday night in front of 30,017, the smallest crowd of the season at Wrigley Field.

It was Wood's eighth straight loss, which is a career high, and the Cubs fell to a season-low 30-games under .500 (49-79). Wood (4-11) gave up three runs, on Bianchi's homer, over seven innings. Asked to sum up his season so far, the lefty shrugged.

Cubs keep it close, but Brewers pull away late

CHICAGO -- Joe Mather did not want his sporadic pitching career to continue, but the outfielder was needed in the ninth inning on Monday. The good news for the Cubs: He threw four pitches, all strikes.

The Cubs called upon Mather to get the final out and end a nine-run ninth inning as the Brewers posted a 15-4 victory. This one was actually closer than the score would indicate.

Aramis Ramirez looked right at home at Wrigley Field, hitting a pair of home runs and a RBI double, and Ryan Braun drove in five runs, including three on his 35th home run, to power Milwaukee.

Indianapolis Colts make roster moves

The Indianapolis Colts today waived the following players: CB-Cameron Chism, CB-Antonio Fenelus, CB-Terrence Johnson, CB-Chris Rucker, S-Matt Merletti, S-David Caldwell, LB-Mike Balogun, WR-Quan Cosby, RB-Alvester Alexander, G-Jason Foster and P-Brian Stahovich.

 

Cameron Chism, Antonio Fenelus, Matt Merletti, Jason Foster and Brian Stahovich were all signed by the Colts as undrafted free agents on April 30, 2012.

 

Terrence Johnson was signed to the Colts practice squad on December 23, 2010. The following season, he saw action in 10 contests (two starts).

Briscoe holds off Power to win at Sonoma

SONOMA, Calif. -- Ryan Briscoe had finished second twice, third and fourth at Sonoma in the past four years. Think he was due?

Briscoe, who started next to Team Penske teammate and pole sitter Will Power for the 85-lap GoPro Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma, held off Power by 0.4408 of a second for his first victory of the season. He's the seventh different winner in 13 IZOD IndyCar Series races.

It was Briscoe's first victory since Texas in 2010.

Power, who clinched the Mario Andretti Road Course Trophy for the third consecutive year, increased his championship points lead from five to 36 over Ryan Hunter-Reay of Andretti Autosport with two races remaining. Hunter-Reay was running third behind the Team Penske cars when the No. 28 Team DHL/Sun Drop Citrus Soda car was bumped from behind by the No. 98 Barracuda Racing car driven by Alex Tagliani in Turn 7 on Lap 75 and stalled. The turn of events dropped Hunter-Reay to an 18th-place finish.

Indianapolis Colts get Vontae Davis in trade with Dolphins

The Indianapolis Colts today received cornerback Vontae Davis in a trade with the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a second-round pick and a conditional late-round pick in 2013.

“Bottom line with this move today is we got better as a football team,” said General Manager Ryan Grigson. “That is always the goal each day for this organization. From the first time he stepped on the field at Illinois as a freshman or in the National Football League as a rookie, you knew Vontae was a special talent. Now he has a chance under Coach Pagano and this coaching staff to reach not only his potential as a football player, but as a person as well. That is our collective goal moving forward.” 

 

Davis, 5-11, 205 pounds, is entering his fourth NFL season. In 44 games played (36 starts), the 24-year-old has totaled 142 tackles (126 solo), 32 passes defensed and nine interceptions for 124 return yards, including one for a touchdown. Last season, Davis led the team with four interceptions and nine passes defensed, while finishing the year with 43 tackles (39 solo). His four interceptions ranked tied for fifth in the AFC.

Notre Dame's Justin Utupo And Cierre Wood Suspended Two Games By Brian Kelly

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame head football coach Brian Kelly has suspended junior defensive end Justin Utupo and senior running back Cierre Wood two games for violating team rules, Kelly announced today.

“Our players are aware of the standards I set for our program and that failure to meet my expectations will result in consequences,” Kelly said. “Justin and Cierre violated our team rules so I’ve suspended them for the first two games of the season.”

Utupo played in 12 games in 2011, primarily on special teams, and was a reserve defensive end on the most recent Notre Dame depth chart. Wood led the Irish in rushing last year with 1,102 yards and scored nine rushing touchdowns whileaveraging 5.1 yards per carry. Wood played in all 13 games in 2011 and started nine contests.

Seventh-inning mistakes costly for Cubs

CHICAGO -- The Cubs missed two double-play opportunities in the seventh inning on Saturday, and then tried to do too much in the bottom of the inning. It's all part of their growing pains.

Pinch-hitter Josh Rutledge and Andrew Brown both homered and the Rockies added the tie-breaking run when Carlos Gonzalez was safe at first on a potential double-play ball in the seventh to post a 4-3 victory on Saturday over the Cubs, who lost for the 19th time in the last 24 games.

Rookie Brooks Raley was in line for the win after going five innings in his fourth big league start. The Rockies tied the game on Brown's home run in the sixth off Manuel Corpas.

Luck, Griffin impress; Redskins top Colts 30-17

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) -- Andrew Luck stepped up in the pocket to avoid the rush, then put a deep ball down the left side into the arms of fellow rookie T.Y. Hilton for a 31-yard touchdown, wrapping up an 80-yard drive.

Robert Griffin III took a high-and-wide shotgun snap and drifted to the right to find Santana Moss for a 4-yard score, also at the end of an 80-yard drive.

Call it a draw between the top two picks in the draft. No interceptions. No fumbles. No what-was-he-thinking moments. Just a display of poise and promise Saturday as Griffin's Redskins defeated Luck's Colts 30-17 in one of the most anticipated games of the preseason.

Cubs erase three-run deficit vs. Rox to snap skid

CHICAGO -- In a matchup of rebuilding clubs, the Rockies looked a little bit further along in the process early on Friday, before the Cubs mounted a long ball-fueled rally in a 5-3 come-from-behind win that gave Chicago fans an indication that better times indeed may lie ahead.

Colorado entered the game on a five-game winning streak, while the Cubs were mired in a 4-17 stretch that began with the July 31 Trade Deadline. Early on, the Cubs looked listless at the plate, struggled in the field and saw righty Jeff Samardzija struggle with his mechanics as Colorado built a 3-0 lead.

Still, the Cubs hung close and came alive late in the type of win that can be a building block for a team full of young players.
