HUNTINGTON, IN—Huntington University senior Matt Friedlund, along with his younger brother, Andy, and friend, Morgan Jones, both students at Albright College in Reading, Pa., plan to ride their bikes cross-country this summer in an effort to raise $5,300 to build a well for Marale, a small village in the African country of Uganda with a population of 2,000 people.
The idea originally for Ride for Marale came from Andy who approached Food for the Hungry, an international relief organization, looking for any kind of effort to help those in need. His older brother, Matt, then soon joined the cause followed by Morgan.

Junior Achievement will hos a Bowl-A-Thon fundraiser at Rainbow Lanes in Huntington on Sunday, April 18 from 1 to 7 p.m.
The financial illiteracy of today's kids is staggering. Junior Achievement (JA) is a non-profit organization which teaches children from grades K through 12 the fundamentals of personal finance, business, economics and free enterprise. In the Junior Achievement programs, over 2,000 children in Huntington learn the difference between a "want" and a "need". They learn how to apply for jobs and practice interviewing. They prepare personal and family budgets. They learn how and why they should save money and avoid accumulating credit card debt so they can appreciate the value of a dollar. Wouldn't it be great if more kids could learn these things and much more? Junior Achievement helps children make better financial decisions as they become adults.

Late in 2009 the City Council turned down a request to impose a “trash fee” on the citizens of Huntington. A public meeting was held and I placed a poll on my website about the matter. At the time, most indications were that the people opposed to a fee would like for the City to make as many cuts in the spending as possible before asking for any type of fee. A lot of the citizens felt that their taxes pay for trash pick-up as opposed to a person living outside the City who pays a lesser amount of taxes but pay to have their trash hauled.
In consideration of this information, I asked the citizens of the City of Huntington to volunteer to form a “task force” to look at the City’s current financial situation and to compile a list of cost-cutting recommendations to the Mayor and the City Council. The group of volunteers met 8 times and consisted of a variety of local residents which included attorneys, a real estate agent, a CPA, local business owners, and home makers. The meetings were also attended and/or observed by 2 other Council members and one of the City’s department heads on separate occasions. The Task Force is submitting a list of 20 cost saving ideas to the City for consideration.
