Many more have incomes above the poverty line, but their incomes are still low enough to qualify for programs like food stamps and Medicaid. The recent economic downturn has seen unemployment rates rise and the use of emergency food pantries increase.
To provide an understanding of the situations that families living in poverty experience every day, Victory Noll Center in Huntington, in partnership with Purdue Extension of Huntington County, will host a Poverty Simulation Thursday, March 4 beginning at 7 p.m.

Lake County Superior Court Judge and 1967 Huntington University graduate, Calvin Hawkins, who is also on the Board of Trustees of the University, has been inspired his whole life by Dr. Martin Luther King. But, he has never met the man. Maybe it was witnessing the Montgomery bus boycott of 1955, as a very young boy, that caught his attention and then as a young man going to Washington D.C., hearing Dr. King's "I have a dream" speech, but he did not get to meet him there either.
