Hayden H. Schenkel, age 93, of Huntington, died at 11:59 p.m. Thursday (July 2, 2009) at Parkview Huntington Hospital.
He was born June 17, 1916 in Huntington to Rueben and Dorothea (Gemmer) Schenkel. Hayden graduated from Urbana High School in 1934. He married Mary K. Goebel on July 29, 1941 in Huntington, Indiana. Hayden worked for Montgomery Ward, Huntington, for 10 years and also worked for Wayne Pump in Fort Wayne. He was the manager of Ford & Implement, the owner of Swift Fertilizer Franchise and the owner of Schenkel’s Grocery Store in Huntington. Hayden was also the District Circulation Manager for Fort Wayne Newspaper from 1957-1965. He later retired from Farm Bureau in 1982 after 16 years as manager. He was an Elder of the Saint Peter’s First Community Church, Past President of the Exchange Club, member of the Amity Masonic Lodge 483, Chairman of the Democratic Party for 6 years, member of the A.A.R.P., member of the Huntington City Council from 1956-1967, Treasurer of the Democratic Men’s Club, longtime member of the Huntington County Baseball, member of the Huntington Jaycees and Chairman and Founder of the Huntington County Democratic Club.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years - Mary K. Schenkel of Huntington; two sons - Roger Lee (Margaret) Schenkel of Lynnfield, Massachusetts and Ronald Wayne (Brenda) Schenkel of Syracuse, Indiana; two sisters - Ada Ulrich and Lela Sale both of Huntington; five grandchildren - Doug Schenkel, Elizabeth Kirkowski, Andrew Schenkel, Sloane Cecil and Ryan Schenkel; and three great-grandchildren - Schayla Cecil, Brayah Cecil, and Jack Schenkel. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers - Wallace and Leon Schenkel, and one sister - Inez Hagenbuch.
Visitation will be 1-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. Monday (July 6, 2009) at Bailey-Love Mortuary with a 10 a.m. funeral service on Tuesday (July 7, 2009) at Saint Peter’s First Community Church, 206 Etna Avenue, Huntington. Burial at Saint Peter’s Cemetery, Huntington.
