Mary Ellen Schenkel, age 84, formerly of Huntington, passed away Wednesday (January 27, 2010) 10:40 p.m. at Peabody Retirement Home in North Manchester, Indiana.
Mary Ellen was born July 4, 1925 in Lagro, Indiana to Raymond H. and Mamie A. (Sharp) Schmalzried. She graduated from Lagro High School in 1943 and went on to attend Ball State Teachers College in Muncie, Indiana. Mary Ellen married Richard L. Schenkel on August 4, 1946 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Huntington. Richard preceded her in death on February 19, 2009 after 62 years of marriage.
Mary Ellen retired as secretary from Schenkel Dairy, Inc. She also taught piano for many years and was an organist for Trinity United Methodist Church. Mary Ellen was a member of the First Mother’s Club, Order of Eastern Star Floral Chapter #75, Psi Iota Xi of Huntington and past president of P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was also a member of The Chapel in Fort Wayne.
Survivors include one son – Jonathan A. (Shelly Snyder) Schenkel of Huntington; one daughter – Barbara S. (J.P.) Carver of Sandpoint, Idaho; two grandchildren – Preston Schenkel, and Brady Schenkel of Huntington. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and son, John Douglas Schenkel.
Celebration of Life gathering will be 1 - 3 p.m. Saturday (January 30, 2010) at Bailey – Love Mortuary. A private graveside service and burial will be held at the Andrews Riverside Cemetery, Andrews with Rev. J.P. Carver officiating.
