I am always quick to criticize our elected officials when they make bonehead moves, so I want to be quick to offer praise too. At this mornings's Huntington Common Council meeting, the Council unanimously adopted:

The primaries are still a year away but that hasn't deterred some already announced candidates from asking for money. Republican candidate for Huntington County Sheriff, Terry Stoffel, and his announced running mate, Chris Newton, have already mailed out at least one letter and there is a rumored golf outing planned for May.

I did not attend Saturday mornings Legislative Update meeting. I probably would have been more enthusiastic if I thought that it would be anything more than what my expectations already were. People acting and trying their best to convince the people who hired them what a great job they were doing. An example might be a quote that I heard was used and something like the “Best bang for your buck”. Being OUR buck is a given, but who is it in fact that's getting the best bang? Let's try the quote over again, may we? "We're trying to get the biggest bang with your buck allowed by law!”. Better?

Friends,
As our country continues to dig itself into a deeper and deeper hole on a daily basis, its citizens are starting to wake up and recognize that our government has become too powerful and leading us in the opposite direction of where we want to go. Phone calls and emails to senators and congressmen seem to have no impact. On April 15th there is a national movement for citizens to gather together around the country and combine their voices to send our government a clear message. NO MORE. No more taxes and no more spending. We are not going to stand for it anymore.

On February 27, 2009 I filed a formal complaint with the Public Access Counselor regarding a meeting the Huntington County Commissioners were holding without giving the public 48 hours notice. Saturday, I received an opinion from the Indiana Public Access Ccounselor regarding my formal compliant:

The newspaper headline today read: "City gets $2.5 million grant." Would the headline seem as appealing if it read: "City to pay half a million dollars for street project." Probably not!

I try to learn something new every day, and I beleive after today's legislative update, I accomplished that. While most people probably thought is was a dry, boring meeting; I say just the opposite, much was learned if you paid attention.

In 1939, President Roosevelt's very frustrated Secretary of State, Henry Morgenthau, after a decade of grandiose "New Deal" programs intended to slash a double-digit unemployment, exploded: "We have tried spending money. "We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work...We have never made good on our promises...I say after eight years of this Administration we have just as much unemployment as when we started... And enormous debt to boot!"

Recently, the mayor ordered a new truck as a multi purpose unit for the city. Two specifics on the order was that the truck was to be deep red in color and also to include a wench. The reasoning for this was that the truck could be used by the fire department, street department so the color would be well suited. In addition, the wench could be used for fallen trees, in crash situations and in general emergency use.

There are very few moments that leave me speechless, this may be one. If you remember the City of Huntington purchased nearly 80 acres of land in December 2008. The purchase was authorized by the Board of Works and Mayor Steve for the purpose of building a new well to help supply the city with water. If I remember correctly, the purchase price was nearly $400,000.

Once in a great, great while, you have the privilege of meeting really nice people that you instinctively like upon first encounter. People that were high school sweethearts, got married, raised a family and did everything right without causing others any problems. People that have conservative values and still believe that the United States of America can and will unite together and get through the current economic down turn.

With the legislative update just a few days away, I thought I would rerun Dan's sorry voting record at this years General Assembly. Maybe this will generate a few questions for Dan'o on Saturday?
