Washington D.C. - On Monday, Rep Dan Burton (R-IN) hosted the "Help Indiana Regain Employment" (H.I.R.E) Job Fair. With over 200 jobs available and 40 businesses ready to hire, 1,120 Hoosiers headed to Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion to hunt for employment. Rep. Burton, hailing the event a success, issued the following statement:
"I am really thankful to all the businesses that participated in the H.I.R.E Job Fair. Many areas in the 5th District have reached double-digit unemployment rates, so it is vital that the community comes together like this to help people find jobs. Because of the high turnout at this fair - over 1,100 people - I have directed my staff to begin planning another job fair for later this year. I will continue to do everything possible to help my constituents get through this tough economy."
Though I feel a job fair is typically a good idea, it only offers already existing jobs to people out of work or looking for new work. It fails to address the real issue of creating new jobs in the area. This only perpetuates the strain of increased competition in today's job market. I'd like to see Rep. Burton do more to attract new jobs to the area.
