BY GARY L. SNYDER
Since 1970, the rise and fall of many political and business figures has been based on the cover-up not the actual deed. Watergate, Iran-Contra, Martha Stewart, "I didn't have sexual relations with that girl, not once, never" and even Scooter Libby were famous cover-ups that were worse than the actual crime. These are lessons you would think most people in a position of power would have learned in "People in Power 101". But over and over again, as sure as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, someone will attempt to cover-up something that on the surface is bad enough, but made worse by the cover-up.
Now, while our latest police controversy doesn't rise to the level of Watergate or Cigargate, Mayor Steve could benefit from some valuable lessons learned over the last 40 years or so and apply them to today's latest scandal. One police detective has resigned, another is on suspension and for what? No seriously, for what? If it wasn't for this site, we wouldn't even know we had a police detective resign or know the name of the detective who received a suspension. I can only surmise from Mayor Steve's actions that he is willing to let the rumors, and boy are there rumors, fly and tarnish the good names of the police officers left to keep us safe.
By all accounts, whatever happened was serious enough to warrant an indefinite suspension and cause one detective to resign. For the Mayor and his administration to continue concealing the truth from the public only fuels the malicious speculation and indicts the entire police force in a scandal, that as far as we know, involves only two people. The Huntington Police Department has had its share of individual scandals over the past several years, including the Mayor's own, so end the silence and the vicious rumors indicting the good name of the Huntington Police Department and the mistrust with the public.

Gary, I may never type these words again beneath a commentary of yours, but you are 100% correct regarding this issue. You will probably be vilified for these comments and the records request-we'll see how they work around those very recent precedents-which would be in keeping with 2009 America.
For whatever reason the folks who call to account those involved in wrongdoing must maintain some certain level of critical decorum or they become the target. Everyone, keep your eyes on the wrongdoers in this case, Gary Snyder isn't one of them.
