With recent revelations about the City of Huntington being somewhere in the vicinity of $1.7 million short in their budget and maybe not being able to meet payroll sometime in the near future; one has to wonder how this could happen? Are they truly short or is this some ingenious plan created by the one of the greatest political minds of our time to generate support for increased taxes and fees? I guess only time will tell but if I were a betting man, I'd have to say, and this is just by judging by this groups past performance, they really screwed this up!
How can I tell? The blame game has already started. So where do we place blame? Where did the accounting error come from? Is it Huntington County Auditor Kathy Juillerat's fault? What about the Assessor Teri Boone? Or did the Mayor just keep being the Mayor and the responsibility for this cluster should be placed directly on his shoulders? I guess it would be really nice to have all that money spent on new firetrucks and Etna Avenue back now, huh? The City would only be about $700,000 short then.

Governor Mitch Daniels joined executives from Onward Manufacturing Company Wednesday to announce that the company will locate its first U.S. grill production center in Huntington, Indiana, creating more than 300 new jobs by 2011.
The company, which manufactures barbecue gas grills for retail sale, will invest several million dollars to improve and equip an existing 400,000 square-foot building, which formerly housed a fireplace manufacturer.
"New jobs in Huntington, new jobs in Kokomo, 700 in all; days like this prove that preserving a low-tax, pro-business environment is the best way to fight our way out of a recession," said Daniels. "If you listened to the president of the company, these jobs could have easily went to China or Mexico, but they didn't. Huntington put Indiana's best foot forward and won the day. I really like the fact that Huntington beat the whole world," add Governor Daniel.

In what can be only characterized as one of the oddest Huntington County Council meetings in recent memory, the council brought up for discussion the Local Option Income Tax (LOIT) but no one made a motion to bring it to a vote. I wonder why? The discussion on the LOIT started with the County Council reversing itself and allowing public comment on any proposed increase in the income tax. This came only after Councilman Don Schoeff indicated he would support public comment on the discussion if, and I am paraphrasing, no one yells at me or calls me names.
After the three or four speakers opining against the LOIT, Mayor Upbama made his best pitch for it. You can see Mayor Upbama on the post just below pushing for it. Why is it now every time I here this guy speak, I picture him with a big red nose, over-sized floppy red shoes and a bicycle horn? Oh stop, you know you do too!

An open letter to the Huntington County Council:
Steve McIntyre
Members of the Huntington County Council
According to your agenda listed for the County Council meeting on Tuesday October 26, 2009, there will be a discussion on the Local Option Income Tax (LOIT). It is my understanding that comments from the Citizens will not be allowed during the discussion with the exception of written statements (which had to be submitted by an October 23rd deadline). The notice of the “written statement only” rule was advertised one time in the Huntington Herald-Press, but was NOT listed anywhere on your official website or on your agenda listed on your website, Those citizens who do not subscribe to the newspaper and rely solely on the information you provide on the City-County website may be in for a surprise when they attend your meeting.
