Senator Lugar releases statement on residency settlement

March 30, 2012 - Throughout his Senate career, Senator and Mrs. Lugar have relied upon the legal guidance of the Marion County Election Board, the Marion County Voter Registration Board, and the offices of three Indiana Attorneys General that their voter registration was proper and legal. This has been completely unchallenged throughout the years and only in the course of this campaign has it been pushed by his political challengers for mischievous purposes. There has never been a question that Sen. and Mrs. Lugar are, and have been, residents of Indiana and Marion County.
 
Today, the court has obtained from the Marion County Election Board assurances that the Lugars may vote from the Lugar family farm which has been in the family for generations and has been managed by Senator Lugar continuously for many years, and this is now where they should vote.
 
With this new legal guidance the issue of the Lugars' voting registration is resolved. Any further challenge will clearly be nothing more than continued pettiness on the part of a handful of disgruntled political opponents.

From Staff to Principal, The Rise of Today’s Top Tier

A lot of times, political staffers are pigeonholed into being just that, staffers.  Most people don’t view them as leaders.  After all, standing in the background they don’t have the experience of speaking in front of a crowd, glad-handing supporters at a fund raiser or dialing-for-dollars from the back seat of an SUV traversing the hills and valleys of their respective state.

Even so, it’s no secret many staffers harbor their own electoral aspirations, wanting to join the fray at some point to earn titles bestowed on them by voters – like “Congressman” or “Senator” – instead of the name given to them by their parents.

While the eventual task might seem daunting, for those looking towards another avenue of service down the road, there are plenty of examples of those that effectively shed the staff stigma and are now among the top tier of future leaders of their party.  Among them are Paul Ryan, John Thune and Mitch Daniels.  Each one, in his own right, was first successful in learning policy and politics in the District before moving back home to face voters.

Fettig endorses Bates, time to support Messer?

Brian Howey, HoweyPolitics.com, is reporting Greg Fettig (yes of the Mourdock campaign fame) has come out and endorsed Don Bates Jr. for Indiana's 6th Congression District.  Two things here:  first, Don Bates Jr. should run from this endorsement as fast and as far away as possible.  Secondly, Don has been opn my show before but, I guess I know who to support now?

Don Bates' campaign for 6th CD announced that Greg Fettig, Founder of America Refocused and an influential leader in Indiana's Tea Party Movement has endorsed Bates (Howey Politics Indiana). "It is my pleasure to announce my endorsement of Don Bates Jr for United States Congress representing Indiana's sixth congressional district.

Rick Santorum: A Campaign in Death Rattle

He’s tired.  He’s frustrated.  He’s defensive.  He’s off-message.  He’s lashing out.  He’s near the end.  The anatomy of what I call a campaign’s “death rattle.”  As a communications professional, political consultant and insider, I have seen it before, and it won’t be the last time.  You might call it a version of “natural selection.”  Meaning, as reality looms late in a campaign cycle, how a candidate acts and reacts, naturally reveals their ability, or inability, to function and perform under pressure.  And, in my view, this is the case with Rick Santorum.

His off-message comment insinuating we would be no better off with Romney over Obama, followed by his outburst at a New York Times reporter are the definitive signs of what I term a campaign’s “death rattle.”  Your head reasons that the end is near, that you’re not going to make it across the goal line, but the candidate’s heart refuses to surrender the battle — it’s a monumental conflict.  It manifests itself into the episodes we have seen in recent days and weeks.

Tuesday nigh fights and forums

Tuesday was a night of debates for candidates in the 5th Congressional District Republican primary as well as for surrogates for Richard Lugar and his primary opponent Richard Mourdock.

The political director for U.S. Senator Richard Lugar, David Wilkie, went head to head Jim Holden, the campaign manager for State Treasurer Richard Mourdock at a Huntington County Tea Party forum.  And the two provided Hoosiers with a preview of what the debate might look like when the two candidates meet on April 11.  Indy Politics spoke with Marion radio talk show host Gary Snyder who was in attendance to get his take on the event.
