Chris Barron: My sister in law lost her battle to breast cancer at 26. Please give TODAY, any amount, to make sure we find a cure for this disease! Please GIVE!
In 2001, 25 year old Heather Gardner rolled over in bed, her elbow touching a lump in her breast that developed overnight. That day, Heather's OB/GYN sent her home, telling her women her age didn't get breast cancer. A biopsy days later diagnosed this 25 year old with Stage III Breast Cancer - a cancer most likely 10 years in the making - and immediately thrust Heather and her family into the dark journey all breast cancer survivors must face.
17 months later, Heather Gardner, a newlywed now, lost her battle to the cancer her mother survived years before.
In 2001, Heather's brother, Shawn Gardner, formed Team Heather, in the Global Race for the Cure, to support and empower his sister in her fight. Since Heather's death, the efforts of Team Heather have raised over $385,000 for underserved women who would not be able to afford breast cancer screenings and treatments otherwise. These efforts have garnered significant media attention on TV, over the radio, in print, and with an entire chapter in Ambassador Nancy Brinker's best-selling memoir, "Promise Me."
