Eating their own?

Editors note:  Gary Snyder Show contributor and publisher of IndyPolitics.org, Abdul Hakim-Shabazz is reporting Republican State Senator Mike Delph is about to participate in a little party cannibalism:

Outraged over the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision regarding illegal immigration, Republican State Senator Mike Delph says he going after the “ivory tower elites and their enablers” and plans on starting with members of his own party.

This past week the U.S. Supreme Court overturned most of Arizona’s illegal immigration law and supporters of the decision locally say that ruling will also likely mean Indiana’s own efforts will be found unconstitutional as well.

In a Facebook post Delph laments about the decision, but also goes a step further…

Today also is the day I decided I just don’t care anymore. I am going after any enabler of the Ivory Tower Elite Establishment that chokes American freedom! I will start next week with a well known statewide Republican officeholder and candidate. If this week didn’t stir the conscience of American Patriots, nothing will.

Pence likens health care ruling to 9/11 terrorist attacks

In a conference call this afternoon with reporters Indiana Congressman Mike Pence called his statement in a House Republican conference relating the Supreme Court’s decision upholding the President’s health care plan to the 9-11 attacks thoughtless and promptly apologized.

POLTICO originally reported Pence’s comments.  Pence also said it was an unfortunate statement and would not elaborate further.

In addition to his apology, Pence also said it was unlikely he would support Indiana joining any expansion of Medicaid as upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.  He also said the final decision about health care reform will be made at the ballot box in November.

An ironic twist in the battle for Obamacare

INDIANAPOLIS – When Long Beach, Indiana native John G. Roberts was up for confirmation to become U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice, he did not get the vote of then U.S. Sen. Barack Obama.

The freshman from Illinois would say in 2005, “The problem I had is that when I examined Judge Roberts’ record and history of public service, was that it was his personal estimation that he has far more often used his formidable skills on behalf of the strong in opposition to the weak.”

And Obama added of his no vote, “I hope that I am wrong. I hope that this reticence on my part proves unjustified and that Judge Roberts will show himself to not only be an outstanding legal thinker but also someone who upholds the Court’s historic role as a check on the majoritarian impulses of the executive branch and the legislative branch.”

Supreme Court upholds Obama’s health-care law

Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. on Thursday joined the liberal wing of the Supreme Court to save the heart of President Obama’s landmark health-care law, agreeing that the requirement for nearly all Americans to secure health insurance is permissible under Congress’s taxing authority.

Even as it upheld that central component of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, however, the court modified another key provision of the law, ruling that the federal government cannot withdraw existing Medicaid funding from states that decide not to participate in a broad expansion of Medicaid eligibility.

The court’s historic compromise, which willaffect the health-care choices of millions of Americans, amounts to a major victory for the White House less than five months before the November elections, although the Medicaid decision sets new limits on the power of the national government.

Oreo Pride: Rainbow-Stuffed Cookie Sparks Boycott

America’s favorite cookie is stirring up more than milk today after Kraft Foods posted a gay pride Oreo on the cookie’s Facebook page.

Oreo posted the photoshopped picture of an Oreo cookie stuffed with rainbow-colored layers of frosting Monday evening with the caption “Proudly support love!”

Over the past 17 hours more than 157,000 people have “liked” the image, 40,000 people have shared it and 20,000 have commented on it.

But while many of the comments were supportive, some Facebook users pledged to boycott the cookie because of the post.

Pence calls for moratorium on new regulation

Indianapolis, IN - Mike Pence announced a plan to build the best small business climate in America by calling for a time-out on new regulations until existing regulations can be reviewed.

"The state has added almost 1,200 new regulations in the past four years," said Pence. "Businesses need relief, and they need it now."

Pence plans to issue an executive order to declare a moratorium on new regulations and ask the Office of Management and Budget to review current regulations to ensure they are the least-costly approach and impose the least burden on job creation. Exceptions will be made for regulations necessary to address emergency health or safety concerns and to comply with federal mandates. The review can be done at no additional cost to taxpayers.

Supreme Court Upholds Key Part of Arizona Law

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Monday rejected much of Arizona’s tough new immigration law but allowed one key provision to stand, saying federal law did not pre-empt the state's instruction to its police to check the immigration status of people they detain.

Several other important provisions of the law conflicted with federal laws, the court found, rejecting provisions that made it a state crime for immigrants not to register with the federal government or to seek or hold jobs without proper documents, and to make warrantless arrests of some people suspected of being deportable.

The Obama administration had urged the court to strike down the whole law, including its provision requiring state law enforcement officials to determine the immigration status of people they stop and suspect are not in the United States legally. That provision also requires that the immigration status of people who are arrested be determined before they are released.
