I'm in favor of burying the lines.
Every once in a while you heard about "Cleetus Shackleford Jr. III" or (insert funny redneck name here) going out and digging without calling the power company and well.....
It thins the herd, doesn't it?
;)
In all seriousness, with the global climate change problem leading to a statistically significant rise in the occurrence of what used to be considered "freak weather events", we can expect more of every kind of severe weather you can think of.
We will have more droughts, tornadoes, derechos (The storm we had recently was a Derecho, they're like land hurricanes sweeping across several states), hurricanes, tsunamis, heat waves...
The weather certainly is not going to be getting better (as a whole, though we might still have some "mild" years to come) in the years ahead, and we might as well either plan to dig in or face things like power outages that affect most of the state, happening more and more.
The climate change deniers tend to be of two kinds.
The first kind are wealthy businessmen who own and depend on fossil fuel companies.
The second type are poorly educated people who have no background (nor even a passing interest) in science.
It's hardly shocking that there are so many of the second type when rich business criminals have so much influence over the public education system.
The criminals think we're all stupid (and most people are).
The fact that they think that all they have to do in their campaign of climate change debate suppression is post a few pictures of the Unabomber kind of says it all doesn't it?
Ask yourself which is more likely...
1. Every objective scientist in the world (not including the ones that are on oil, gas, and coal company payrolls) are engaged in a massive conspiracy to deceive the public.
or
2. Every fossil fuel company, which makes record profits and pays record low taxes every year (including under President Obama!) might have good financial incentive to mislead the American people about climate change.
I'm sort of leaning towards option 2, myself.
Since we can't convince people to take simple, practical, cost-effective measures to reduce their carbon footprint (like changing the kind of light bulbs they buy for crying out loud!), it's probably better that we just prepare our infrastructure to handle the kind of disasters that are coming.
Yes, bury the power lines. ;)
